Why restoration is needed
The Kempsey-Armidale Road is a vital east–west link and plays a critical role in agriculture, tourism and community connectivity. It is also an important transport link connecting the regional centres of Armidale in the Northern Tablelands and Kempsey on the Mid North Coast.
Due to extensive natural disaster damage to the Kempsey-Armidale Road which has affected stability, Armidale Regional Council has committed to full restoration to pre-disaster standards. Funding is through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, funded by the Australian and NSW governments.
While full restoration funding was secured improvement works have been complete at several locations along the project through the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Roads and Fixing Local Roads funding programs.
The damaged section of the road has been closed to through traffic since 2022. The closure has been necessary to protect the stability of the road and maintain safe access for those that rely on it.
